Blue Origin Will Increase New Glenn Thrust 15-25% and Make Rocket Bigger

Blue Origin Supercharges New Glenn Rocket with Major Thrust and Size Upgrades

The race for commercial space dominance just got a significant boost. Blue Origin, Jeff Bezos’s aerospace venture, is dramatically upgrading its highly anticipated New Glenn rocket before it even reaches full operational capacity. These improvements signal a fierce commitment to capturing the heavy-lift market, promising enhanced performance starting as early as 2026.

Performance Hikes Starting with NG-3

The New Glenn vehicle, designed as a reusable heavy-lift rocket, is set to receive critical performance enhancements beginning with the NG-3 flight scheduled for early 2026. These aren’t minor tweaks; they represent substantial improvements across both stages.

Specifically, the first stage—powered by seven BE-4 engines—will see a 15% increase in thrust. This additional power allows for greater margins during launch and potentially heavier initial payloads. However, the most striking enhancement comes to the upper stage, which is slated to receive a massive 25% boost in capability. This increase in upper-stage efficiency is crucial for delivering payloads to higher orbits, deep space, and for complex mission profiles.

By integrating these changes into the vehicle early in its operational lifecycle, Blue Origin is positioning New Glenn to be one of the most capable rockets available, directly challenging competitors in both reusability and lift capacity.

Introducing the 9×4 Super-Heavy Variant

Beyond the fundamental thrust upgrades, Blue Origin also unveiled plans for an even more formidable version of the rocket: the 9×4 super-heavy configuration. This iteration involves making the rocket physically larger and more powerful, elevating its capability to the realm of true super-heavy launchers.

This super-heavy variant is designed to carry immense payloads, with capabilities exceeding 70 tons to orbit. This capacity places the New Glenn firmly alongside, or even above, other modern super-heavy launch systems currently in development or active use. For major governmental and commercial customers planning large constellation deployments or deep space infrastructure, this kind of capacity is invaluable.

The continuous development and iteration of the New Glenn platform demonstrate Blue Origin’s strategy of leveraging technology advancements rapidly. By not waiting for years between major revisions, they ensure their vehicle remains competitive in an increasingly crowded and rapidly evolving launch market. The ability to offer a massive payload volume combined with first-stage reusability makes the enhanced New Glenn a compelling option for future space infrastructure requirements.

These massive performance leaps will fundamentally alter the cost and feasibility analysis for future orbital and deep space missions. Read more about these significant technical developments on Next Big Future.
