Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are the new Duke and Duchess of Sussex as they emerged from St.George’s Chapel, Windsor. It has been a wedding full of royal tradition and injected gospel energy. What will be the new Duchess of Sussex wearing for her day? This fact had been kept secret until Meghan stepped from the Rolls-Royce bridal car and onto the steps of the chapel at Windsor Castle.
This was a study in simple elegance in white silk alongside a stunning train. The dress was designed by Claire Waight Keller at the French fashion house Givenchy.
“You look amazing,” Harry whispered when he first caught sight of her. “Thank you,” she answered.
Meghan’s African-American roots had been referred to all along the service which had put diversity at its heart. Gospel music was present and so was the energy of the Chicago-born preacher, the Most Rev Bishop Michael Curry. A box office guest list of 600 put Hollywood stars along with royalty. Actor George Clooney and his wife Amal, the Queen of talk-shows Oprah Winfrey and the Queen of the tennis court Serena Williams attended the wedding sitting in the historic quire opposite the Queen. Actors Idris Elba, Tom Hardy, and Carry Mulligan had been spotted alongside chat-show host James Corden, David, and Victoria Beckham, Sir Elton John and Markle’s co-stars from Suits. Ten bridesmaids and page boys- aging from two to seven, including Prince George and Princess Charlotte- all accompanied the bride while she walked through the nave of the 15th-century chapel. When the service was done, the new Duke and Duchess of Sussex emerged into the sunshine onto the chapel steps. “Do we kiss?” she would whisper discreetly. “Yeah,” Harry would reply. The couple then made their way through Windsor’s streets in an Ascot Landau being pulled by 4 Windsor grey horses.
When the carriage eventually pulled into the gated grounds of Windsor Castle, Harry appeared to have said: “I’m ready for a drink now” to his new wife, at least according to a lip-reader.
Inside the St.George’s Hall, the Queen hosted a lunchtime reception. Pol Roger Brut Reserve non-vintage champagne and a selection of wines were present. And wedding guests enjoyed canapes and bowl food while Sir Elton John performed at the request of the groom. Guests were reportedly moved to tears at the speeches of the Prince of Wales and newly married Prince Harry.
