The Real Life Story Of Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp has had a long career spanning more than three decades. And over the course of these three decades, he’s played more than a few strange characters- due to his ongoing collaboration with notably weird director Tim Burton. He’s played roles like Willy Wonka to Sweeney Todd, this can be attributed to the fact that he has marched to the beat of a different drummer. We have heard no shortage of the larger-than-life stories of Depp over the years, but they don’t reveal the entire story. With that being said, let’s take a look at The Real Life Story Of Johnny Depp:

His relationship with alcohol:

He’s a drinker, but not an alcoholic; he has admitted to self-medicating with alcohol, but he doesn’t have a compulsion for drinking. He has been drinking buddies with the likes of Marlon Brando, Hunter S. Thompson and more. When he sat down for a Rolling Stone article in 2013, Depp admitted to being sober for a year and a half. A Boston Globe article from 2008, has the quote of Depp saying that he poisoned himself with alcohol because of the fame he experienced was a lot to take in. And ex-wife Amber Heard, not only accused Depp of abuse but also alleged that he had been an “alcoholic and drug addict”. There’s also the reported delaying of filming the last installment of Pirates Of The Carribean because of the drama with Amber and drinking.

The Financial Worries:

If you have a property worth  $50 to $60 million, and a career that’s earned $650 million, is it possible for you to have financial woes? Well, that’s a reality Johnny Depp had to face. A recent article shares the story from his business manager’s perspective, that outlines a 2012 discussion in which two advisers tried making him understand that his income supports the outflow of his discretionary spending(art, jewelry, wine, property) and the $3.6 million per year he paid his personal staff alongside other expenses. Depp finally agreed to sell his yacht, but, last year, he fired both the advisors.

He’s passionate about free expression in the art:

In 2016, Depp was a part of the “Imprisoned for Art” campaign with other artists. It was organized by the Voice Project, who was an advocacy group working to raise awareness about imprisoned artists. Peter Gabriel, Nadya Tolokonnikova (of Pussy Riot) and Tom Morello (formerly of Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave) are some of the other activists joining Depp in the portrayal of artists who have been imprisoned unfairly. Each of them appeared in mug shots to signify a real person. Depp portrayed Oleg Sentsov, a Ukranian filmmaker who had been serving a 20-year sentence in Russia. Not a Trump fan:

Depp has hardly ever been a fan of the President of the United States of America. And this from long before he was nominated. In fact, he had donned a wig and a face full of prosthetics and portrayed him in the Funny or Die movie The Art Of The Deal (based on the Trump book of the same name).

The soft spot for kids:

In an emotional interview on The Graham Norton show, Norton asked Depp what it’s like to bring the gift of Jack Sparrow to children. As you all know already, Depp visits children’s hospitals and schools as his ever-so-popular character from the Pirates franchise. Depp then revealed his own struggles with his daughter’s illness. He told Norton that it was really him who got a gift from those visits- that to be able to “bring a smile or a giggle was everything.”

It appears that Depp has a strong attachment to his Captain Jack Sparrow as well as his young fans. This is all The Real Life Story Of Johnny Depp.

His role in bringing Gilbert Grape to the theaters:

What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?, the 1993 flick helped launch a young Leonardo DiCaprio’s career. It also saw Depp pair up with Juliette Lewis onscreen and become a cult classic. However, it may not have been filmed at that time, if not for Depp’s then-girlfriend Winona Ryder. She was the one to read Peter Hedges’ novel of the same name and get Depp into reading it as well. He had a strong feeling that it was a modern-day Catcher in the Rye and identified strongly with the character Gilbert Grape.

Depp told music video and My Life as a Dog director Lasse Hallström of the book and two started working on the film even before there was a script in place. And the rest is history.

His vision problems:

Nobody is truly perfect and even someone of Depp’s caliber isn’t exempt from that rule. As Depp told Rolling Stone, he has had to battle with vision problems all through his life.

“Everything is just very, very blurry,” he explained. “I’ve never had proper vision.”

Essentially being blind in his left eye and near and/or farsighted in the right, he’s only capable of seeing a few inches away from his face. Not surprising though, Depp has revealed that he can’t see 3D movies. A neurologist, Margaret Livingston suspects that he may have stereoblindness.

The Black Ghiandola:

Johhny Depp appears in Hollywood blockbusters. But, at the core, he’s very much passionate about his craft. So much is his love for the craft, that he acted in The Black Ghindola, a micro-budgeted zombie movie, that was filmed in just five days. It is also probably the most star-studded short film about zombies. The short film was written by 16-year-old Anthony Conti, who was struck with stage IV adrenal cortical cancer. This all came together with the help of Make A Film Foundation, a charity founded in 2007. It helps kids and teens with life-threatening medical problems.
