Smartphone technology is advancing rapidly. Phones are getting slimmer, faster, sleeker. And immersion is the latest craze. Companies are trying to fit more and more screen into the phone. And this time, Oppo has beaten everyone to the punch. They’ve brought a phone that’s almost all-screen. The Oppo Find X is pushing the limits of immersion we expect from a phone. And the technologies it’s packing to reach the feat are fascinating.

The Amazing Screen
The Oppo Find X has a screen that wowed us all. The 6.42-inch AMOLED screen has can display vibrant colors and deep blacks. The 19.5:9 display ratio mimics the Samsung Galaxy S9. The wide display and curved edges increase immersion and comfort. But the best thing about it is the screen area. It has an astonishing 93.8% screen area to the front side ratio. Little to no bezel is visible in the front. Making it feel almost like a window rather than a phone. Oppo used all kinds of tricks to achieve this feat. Their motorized system, ‘Chip On Panel’ and many more shrunk the bezels to barely noticeable.
Motorized Body
The secret to its incredible screen ratio is the motorized body. The phone has a separate top part. That holds the front and back cameras and other sensors. The top part is hidden. Except when you want to take a picture or use the sensors. Then, a motorize system will bring it up with just a swipe. This strategy enabled Oppo to remove a big bezel area. Which was a big step for an immersive experience.
3D Face Recognition
To everyone’s surprise, Oppo is the first one to replicate Apple’s facial recognition. Like Apple’s Face-ID, the Find X’s technology uses 3D mapping to recognize faces. It uses various sensors and camera to project 15,000 dots. Oppo claims this security feature is
… 20 times safer than fingerprint recognition for unlocking the phone.
This 3D Face Recognition is an impressive feat from Oppo.
Additional Features
The Find X also has many smaller features for quality of life. Their AI-enhanced dual cameras will capture great quality photos. The camera also supports HDR and 4K @ 30 fps video capture. Like Apple, this phone has a fun 3D emoji system, the Omoji.
Find X’s Drawbacks
The Find X is a phone comparable to today’s flagships. In terms of power, features, design, it’s no slouch. But still it has a few drawbacks. The first thing is no 3.5 mm audio jack. With so much going on inside the phone, there wasn’t any space for it. The USB-C port is only USB 2.0. This will hurt the transfer speeds. The phone’s software side is a bit lacking. The phone comes with bloatware and so far, no google play store. Our biggest concern is the motorized system. It’s unknown how reliable it is, and how long it will work properly. Moving parts are the first to run into problems. The Find X is a great phone. But all these problems stop it from becoming the best pick.
Conclusion
Oppo has manages to create an amazing phone. It is powerful. The design is sexy. It’s comfortable in the hand. And its filled with innovative technologies. It is a bit pricey, but not enough to deter customers. The phone is targeted towards Europe. There, it’ll hit store shelves in August, 2018. But that’s it for now. After many rumors, its final. The phone won’t be coming to the US market after all. Which is a shame. But still we are very excited to see its launch. How much is going to sell? What will be the feedback? We are keeping our eyes open.
