Aconcagua Provincial Park is situated at a distance of 190 km from the Mendoza city. It is surrounded by a setting of Central Andes. It was formed in the year 1983 to protect the archaeological material present around the highest peak of America, flora, and fauna. It is as high as 6960 meters, and it is considered to be the tallest mountain in the world excluding the continent of Asia.

The climate of this park

This park remains quite dry and cold throughout the year and the temperature here ranges from -5 degree centigrade to 20-degree centigrade at night. As you move higher, the temperature gets lower and the wind blows at a speed of 140km/h. It is for this reason that trekking here is considered to be extremely challenging and Aconcagua trekking is extremely popular among climbers from all over the world.

 

Important facts about Aconcagua

It is one among the ten natural reserves and also one among the three most protected areas of the high mountains. The other two protected areas include Laguna del diamante and Tupungato volcano. The lower valley of the Horcones borders this park in both the west and the southwest. In the North and the East, it is bordered by the Vallelasvacas in the north as well as the East.

The surface area of this park is 71000 hectares and there are a number of peaks higher than 5000 meters above the sea level present here. The highest height of this park is 6962 meters high above the sea level. It is undoubtedly considered to be the highest in the Western hemisphere. The second highest mountain here is the seven summit circuit. It resides inside the territory of Argentina and is at a distance of about 12 kilometres from the Chile border.

The water in this park comes from the glaciers that cover an area of about 32 square kilometers. In between this area, you will be able to find Lasvacas, glacier de los Polacos, the upper and lower Horcones and Gussfeldt. When the glaciers melt then this water reaches the lower and the upper river Horcones. Apart from these, this park also gets some water supply from precipitation. There are no lake glaciers in this area, and there are only remains of these areas in the higher mountain areas. The Horcones Lake is the most important lake in this park.
